Brad Warren & Mark Kinnear Among The Winners At Sungold Stadium Sunday, 21 March 2010 by Gavin White
A packed program of events at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium on Sunday March 21 concluded with ‘young gun’ Brad Warren claiming the victory in the Australian Wingless Sprint final ahead of Jye Saunders and Victorian champ Jeff Judd. A total of nine classes competed in an afternoon of exciting and entertaining racing under sunny skies for the second Day Show of the season.
Warren contested the Victorian Sprintcar Title at Sungold Stadium a week earlier and returned to victory lane in the AWS final. Warren put in a superb performance to edge his way clear at the finish to defeat a fast finishing Jye Saunders who began from sixth. Starting from third Judd looked ominous considering the night before he had won back to back Victorian AWS titles however he would settle for third. Sean McKeever excelled to run fourth ahead of former Junior Sedan racer Mick Rigby.
Tim Fisher was as high as second before bumping the main straight wall knocking the driveline out of the immaculate #99. Paul Drew was another driver unlucky not to figure toward the front when he started second however slipped back early in the race. Heat wins went to Paul Drew, Judd and Warren on a perfect racing surface.
The Junior Sedans provided some excellent racing with Mark Kinnear saluting in first place ahead of elder brother Peter with Dion Bellman in third. A gentle roll by Meagan Brittain in the middle of the race halted proceedings while the family battles between the Kinnear’s and the Bellman boys was worth watching. Chris Bellman, Dion Bellman, Luke McCutcheon and Mark Kinnear all scored heat race wins.
Avalon’s Jamie Payne swept his rivals when he was unbeaten for the afternoon in the Open ASCF Sedans winning both heats and the final. Adam Wilson pursued Payne to the flag in the final with Craig Newman and Gavin Catley rounding out the finishers.
There was a surprise victor in the Street Stock final when Brendan Hannaberry reeled in early pacesetter Brad McLure to take a convincing and popular win. Jason Degoldi impressed as he also raced by McLure who settled for third with little rubber left on his right rear tire. McClure earlier won both qualifying heats in impressive fashion.
Geelong’s James Aranyosi won the Formula 500 final ahead of Leigh Van Ginneken and Graham Mollenoyux in a fast paced event. Van Ginneken and Aranyosi split the heat race wins with Jack Lee returning to the track only days after destroying the front of his Swift chassis in Tasmania. Aranyosi’s speed was impressive, as he was only four seconds outside Matt Brown’s long standing race record.
The funniest moment of the afternoon occurred when Allansford’s Jack Bell won the Junior Sedan B grade final then persistently waited for the chequered flag to complete his victory lap. After two attempts to stop and gain the flag it was eventually handed over much to delight of the fans that soaked up the moment for the young up and coming star. Third of the Kinnear boys Paul raced into the runner up spot with Jess Salisbury impressive as she raced to third. Bell and Steven Watts shared the heat race wins.
Local favourite Alan Howden relived his glory years when he won the Heavy Hot Rod final ahead of Mount Gambier legend Graham Dycer. Dennis Bald enjoyed the afternoon with a third place finish. Dycer and Howden shared heat race wins.
Peter Walters who used the low side to run down early leader Craig Ansell won the Limited Sportsman final. Walters was victorious from Ansell with polesitter Sandy Williamson in third. Williamson and Ansell shared the heat race wins. The final class on the program was the Vintage Sprintcars with Ray Abbott taking the win ahead of some stiff opposition. Graham Pitcher impressed as he finished second with Mal Somerville rounding out the top 3. Abbott and Pitcher both recorded heat race wins during the afternoon.
Attention turns to the final event on the calendar when the Easter Sprintcar Trail on Easter Sunday night for the third leg of the trail. A great field of 50 Sprintcars have nominated including Max Dumesny, David Murcott, Matthew Reed, Steven Lines, Ryan Farrell and defending event winner Robbie Farr.
