Stewart Owen was there when Premier Speedway Club held its first meeting on February 8, 1958 at the Warrnambool racecourse.
On that occasion he was a spectator but that didn’t last for long. “At the second event I stuck my head in the pits and some guy said `what are you doing, can you take these papers up to the office’,” Stewart said.
That started his association as announcer, statistician and historian for the speedway, an association that lasted for 46 years.
Stewart also kept the very first speedway program from back in 1958 and that will form part of his display at Rotary Collecta-Bool on April 3-4, Easter Saturday and Sunday at the Warrnambool entertainment Centre.
Stewart, a life member of the Premier club, has collected everything he can find with speedway written on it.
He has a meticulously catalogued and kept newspaper clippings, magazines and programs relating to Premier Speedway and has them neatly sorted in his Warrnambool home. He has copies of the first `Classic’ program (which cost just 20 cents to buy) and the most recent 2010 program.
Some of the material came out for public display when the speedway celebrated its 50th anniversary in February 2008 and Stewart has agreed to loan some of his special items for Collecta-Bool.
His speedway memorabilia will be supported by several other exhibits, including a genuine 1958 hot rod sprintcar. Collecta-Bool will also feature displays of posters, models, framed photos, standees and other speedway and car-related items.
Rotary Collecta-Bool is a fund-raiser for the Western Region Alcohol and Drug Association.
Collecta-Bool organiser Rick Bayne said more than 25 individual collections had been confirmed for this year’s event.
These include: • Speedway memorabilia • Vintage records • Disney memorabilia • Radios • Perfume bottles • Beer glasses • Australian movie memorabilia • Mystery items • Fire brigade memorabilia • Toys • Swap cards, and many more.
Anyone interested in sharing their collections for Collecta-Bool can contact organiser Rick Bayne on 0418 140489.
